Welcome to the

Institute of Information Systems (E184)

of the Faculty of Informatics at the Vienna University of Technology.

The institute is concerned with the representation, storage, interpretation, distribution, protection and manipulation of data and knowledge. The research area ranges from the theoretical foundations of information systems to supporting implementation methods. In particular, the institute's research and teaching are concerned with the following subjects:

Distributed systems and software platforms, Internet technologies, Web Engineering and Internet Security, software architecture and distribution services, web services and service-oriented architectures; intelligent web technologies; semi-structured data; data base and information systems; theory of computational complexity; analysis of inference algorithms; data modeling; object-oriented systems; formal and computational aspects of artificial intelligence (AI) in general; logic-based formalisms and methods for AI; knowledge representation and reasoning; nonmonotonic reasoning; knowledge-based planning; mobile robots; and, foundations of intelligent software agents.

The institute comprises five groups:
