The goal of middleware is to provide an integration framework for multiple and potentially diverse computing platforms. Middleware allows developers to engineer distributed applications more easily, providing abstractions and primitives to handle distribution and coordination. Today's advances in computing, including development of pervasive applications, exacerbates the diversity problem, introducing variations not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of environments and device characteristics. Software Engineers are therefore challenged both in the area of development of new and scalable middleware systems, where open, heterogeneous, component-based platforms should provide richer functionality and services, and in the area of application development, where tools to simplify the use of middleware solutions are necessary. SEM 2004 is the premier workshop that brings together the research and practice community of software engineering working in both areas. SEM 2004 is the fourth international workshop on software engineering and middleware of the EDO/SEM workshop series. Previous workshops of this series were successfully held in 1999, 2000, and 2002. The Software Engineering and Middleware Proceedings can be purchased from Springer Verlag and are available online at Springer Link. [04/02/05] If you would like to apply for a student stipend, please fill in this form and send it by email to sem04 at infosys.tuwien.ac.at. Additionally, we plan to use the money originally allocated for the best paper awards to fund additional students. Hence, no cash prizes will be given. [08/24/04] Due to organizational reasons, the deadline for the camera ready version of the accepted papers has been changed to August 25. [07/30/04] The notifications of whether your papers have been accepted or rejected will be sent out by 07/27/04 (Apia, Samoa Time). [07/27/04] We are pleased to announce the availability of student travel grants. With these grants we want to encourage graduate student participation at SEM by partially funding the travel costs of students who would otherwise be unable to attend. Thanks to IBM Research for funding. Details on how to apply for a fund will be made available soon. [06/07/04] We got the confirmation from Springer Verlag that they will publish workshop post proceedings. Publishing the proceedings after the workshop gives participants the chance to improve their papers on the basis of the workshop discussions. [04/22/04] As in the previous years, we plan to have post workshop proceedings published by Springer Verlag. We are currently in the process of negotiating this. More information will be available shortly. [03/18/04] |
