In this lecture with lab (VL -- Vorlesung mit Laborübung) students will get an overview about relevant concepts, technologies and standards in the area of Large Scale Distributed Computing (LCDC). In particular we will cover all aspects of Cloud Computing infrastructures - targeting arbitrary Cloud infrastructures - without focusing on any of the current Cloud products (e.g., Amazon products, Google App, etc.) Furthermore, the lecture will contain the basic knowledge necessary to apply LSDC in practice and to configure, use and apply LSDC in different application domains. The lecture will be held in either german or english language (depending on the liking of the audience). All written material such as assignments, tests, slides or further reading will be provided in english language.

In this lecture with lab (VL -- Vorlesung mit Laborübung) students will get an overview over relevant concepts, technologies and standards from the area of Large Scale Distributed Computing Computing (LCDC). Furthermore, the lecture will contain the basic knowledge necessary to apply LSDC in in practice. The lecture will be held in either german or english language (depending on the liking of the audience). All written material such as assignments, tests, slides or further reading will be provided in english language.

Summary of the Lecture

In this lecture with practical part (VU -- Vorlesung mit integrierter Übung) students will get an overview over relevant concepts, technologies and standards from the area of Large Scale Distributed Computing Computing (LCDC). Furthermore, the lecture will contain the basic knowledge necessary to apply LSDC in in practice (for instance in medical research). The lecture will be held in either german or english language (depending on the liking of the audience). All written material such as assignments, tests, slides or further reading will be provided in english language.

In the theoretical part of the lecture we will cover following topics:

  • Overview about the most popular LSDC paradigms like High Performance Computing (HPC), Grid computing, global distributed computing, and voluntary computing
  • Grid Computing in detail: Grid architectures, Grid resource management, Web and Grid services (OGSA, WSRF), resource provisioning in Grid, Grid workflows
  • Cloud Computing: delivery models, deployment types, etc.
  • Cloud technologies (e.g., virtualization, SLAs), Cloud business models, security, privacy and trust issues in Cloud computing, compliance-based Cloud middleware
  • Green IT: energy efficient large-scale distributed systems

In the practical part the students will have to implement, deploy and test Cloud based applications dealing with resource management, energy eficiency and monitoring. The practical part will consist of one assignments, and students will work in teams of 3.

For the course a registration in TUWIS++ as well as in the DSG Teaching Tool is necessary. For any questions on the lecture please contact us at the Ivona Brandic.

Maximum Number of Students

For organisatorial reasons the course is restricted to at most 50 students. Registration are given out first come - first served, according to registrations in TUWIS++. Please do not register for the course if you are not honestly interested in doing it.

Necessary Prior Knowledge

Students enrolling to this course should have the following prior knowledge:

  • A solid background in procedural and object-oriented programming.
  • Already taken the introductory course of the Distributed Systems Group (Distributed Systems).
  • Basic knowledge of Web Services and Service-Oriented Architectures (as taught for in instance in the course Internet-Applikationen).

None of these are hard requirements, but during the course it will be assumed that students have reasonable programming skills and know their way around in the distributed system area.
