Florian Skopik joined the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) in 2011 and is currently working in the research program ICT Security, focusing on applied research of security aspects in distributed systems and service-oriented architectures. Current research interests include secure smart grids and the security of critical infrastructures, especially in course of national cyber defense.
Before joining AIT, Florian Skopik was with the Distributed Systems Group at the Vienna University of Technology as a research assistant and post-doctoral research scientist from 2007 to 2011, where he was involved in a number of international research projects. In context of these projects, he also finished his PhD studies. Florian Skopik further spent a sabbatical at IBM Research India in Bangalore for several months. He published around 40 scientific conference papers and journal articles, and is member of various conference program committees and editorial boards. In parallel to his studies, he was working in the industry as firmware developer for microcontroller systems for more than 10 years.
Research Interests
Current research interests can be basically devided into two tracks: (i) Social Computing, and (ii) ICT Security Research. However, when taking a closer look into the publications, one can easily see that both tracks heavily converge, i.e., the Social Computing Track deals with trust issues in collaborative environments, while in the ICT Security Track more and more social concepts are applied to solve issues in the field of cyber defense.

Social Computing Track

A large amount of social networks and collaboration platforms are realized as service-oriented systems enabling flexible compositions of services and support of interactions. Usually, interactions between entities in such systems do not only span supporting software services, but also human actors, participating in the network. A mixed service-oriented system is therefore composed of human and software services. In open eco-systems where massive collaborations between thousands of humans and services take place, flexibly joining and leaving the environment, their interactions are highly dynamic and often influenced by the role and reputation of collaboration partners. Therefore, introducing the notion of trust in such environments can help to improve the overall benefit of social systems and people's collaboration performance.
This research aims at covering, models, algorithms and architectures that support the management of trust in such mixed service-oriented systems environments. In particular we deal with:
